Xyla has a frenemy…
a nagging mother…
a missing father…
and a plan.
But the plan is a little “off.”
Something’s rotten in Iowa…and it’s not the produce.
Preorder now! July 7 will be here soon!!
Some aspects of my childhood reflected in the book:
- The small farm in the Midwest where I grew up.
- Hard work in the fields.
- Farm accidents.
- Too much rain.
- Drought.
- Tornadoes.
- A horse named Twiggy.
- Lambing in a brutally cold winter.
- My use of lists and routine to keep my scattered self organized.
- My ability to hyper-focus on things I find interesting.
- A bottle-fed lamb named Lambchop that I took to a pet show and to Show and Tell at school.
- Mushroom hunting with my grandfather in the woods behind the farm.
- The concrete horse tank where Gramp and I ate Archway homestyle cookies and watched goldfish swim through the moss.
- The creek that coursed through our woods.
- A german shepherd that loved getting in the way.
And just for fun….check out my name spelled out by land formations as seen from space!!!! You can do this, too, at the NASA Landsat Science link.

🥳💖 Exciting about the nearing release date!!!
I have always been fascinated by found-letters in land formations…so fun!
I love that NASA does this! Despite the fact that the agency is being gutted by our current administration. I can only hope that NASA survives and gets rejuvenated.
Congratulations! I will be sure to request a copy for our library.
Thank you, Pam!!! I appreciate it!
Congrats on your new book, Jilanne! As a former resident of Illinois and Wisconsin, living in areas surrounded by farms, your book sounds exciting!
Thank you, Cathy! My family all still live in Illinois (some still farm), and I have so many friends in the Midwest. I’ll be taking a quick trip downstate to visit them soon before Chicago’s ALA conference.
Jilanne,
I love that you included you make lists in your list of ways your book draws from your childhood! Talk about being on point! Thanks for reminding me of the pub date because I received an email recently reminding me my preorder of your book was coming soon and I worried it was today but I’m just now sitting down!
It’s truly a book of my heart. I still have family who farm in Illinois. At this point, I’m wondering if they’ll ship before the July 7 date….I just received my author copies!!!❤️
CAN’T WAIT!!!
Thank you, Mona!
What can I add to others comments but 🥳 and ❤️
